Knowledge Base
Q:
Where can I find out more about shared space opportunities for my nonprofit?
A:

Sharing space (and other resources) can decrease an organization's overhead costs and improve efficiency. Sharing can also help organizations expand their reach if the collaboration occurs between groups with complementary mission objectives. Aside from the benefits, some additional issues surrounding shared space should be considered.

Finding shared space may be a simple matter of leveraging existing networks and/or contacting organizations that serve the same population(s) as yours. Below are a few options for learning about and finding shared spaces:

  • Search idealist.org's Resources pages for the the term "shared space" for postings submitted by other organizations.
  • Use the Nonprofit Startup Resources by State Map. After selecting your state, scroll to the "Management/Technical Assistance Providers" section to see if any shared space programs are listed. Note: the Startup Map is continually being updated, and not every state will have shared space listings.

Nonprofit collaborations can lead to greater security and sustainability in the long term. Sharing office space is just one form of nonprofit collaboration. Our Nonprofit Collaboration Database provides examples of real, successful nonprofit collaborations (including shared space arrangements).

Office Space for nonprofits
Keep in mind that local businesses could very well be an option for shared space. True you may have to meet around their schedules but that can keep overhead cost lower in addition perhaps you can trade out services for space like bookkeeping, accounting, etc. Another option to check out in your communities is co-working space. These establishments offer everything from a mailing address, to private offices you can reserve. In addition for typically nominal fees you can on a daily basis meet in the common areas which will help in keeping cost low because you only pay for what you need. Companies such as Regus, Office Suites PLUS and Servcorp are the larger office space providers but they to may offer discounts, space, etc on a need only basis. I know meeting space, virtual office space and office for a day is part of what they offer.
