Come meet Carrie Carpenter and Brittany O'Connor and learn about the giving priorities of Charter One.
In 2012, Charter One invested nearly $16 million through charitable giving and community sponsorships to support more than 1,000 nonprofit organizations. Grab a cup of coffee and hear more about their regional grantmaking priorities in support of a healthy community.
About the presenters:
Carrie Carpenter is the Senior Vice President, Midwest Director of Public Affairs for Charter One and RBS Citizens. She joined the bank in 2005. She is responsible for charitable giving, marketing sponsorships, government affairs, executive positioning and speech-writing, media and public relations. As part of her leadership of the bank’s community involvement, Carpenter created the bank’s Carving out Hunger program to feed the hungry throughout Ohio over the holidays. She co-created the Charter One Uptown Initiative, the bank’s $150 million investment program to strengthen Cleveland’s community revitalization efforts through focused investment in the greater University Circle area. Carpenter created Charter One Growing Communities in 2010 in Cleveland’s Ohio City Market District. She worked to expand the program to multiple states in 2012 and 2013.
Prior to joining Charter One, Carpenter led public affairs and media efforts at nonprofit organizations and for the government sector. She served as the national communications director for Children’s Rights in New York, as a lobbyist for the Center for Families and Children, and worked for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown.
Carpenter earned her B.A. magna cum laude from Kent State University in political science and women’s studies, and is currently enrolled in The George Washington University’s Masters in Strategic Public Relations program. She serves on the Boards of the Cleveland Food Bank as Vice Chair, Greater Cleveland Film Commission as Vice Chair, the Cleveland Leadership Center and is the Past-President of Cleveland Public Theatre.
Brittany O’Connor is Vice President and Manager of Community Affairs at Charter One, Ohio. In her role, she manages charitable giving, communications, volunteer coordination and other community initiatives. She manages Charter One’s signature programs, including Gear for Grades and Carving out Hunger. Prior to joining Charter One in 2005, Brittany spent 11 years in the non-profit sector. Most recently, she served as the Director of Government Affairs at the Center for Families and Children, a social services provider in Cleveland.
Brittany is very active in her community of Lakewood. She served for four years on the Citizens Advisory Committee, which makes recommendations to City Council on the use of Community Development Block Grant funds, and was co-chair of the successful effort to build an off-leash dog park in the city. She is active in the Democratic Party, serving on the Cuyahoga County precinct committee and as ward leader. She is on the Board of Neighborhood Housing Services, and serves on the public policy committee of the Ohio Grantmakers Forum and the government affairs committee of United Way.
