Proposal Writing Basics

Learn the key components of a proposal to a foundation--and learn the ins and outs of hiring consultants for proposal development and other nonprofit work.
For those new to proposal writing, this class will cover:
- How the proposal fits into the overall grantseeking process
- What to include in a standard proposal to a foundation
- Tips for making each section of your proposal stronger
- What funders expect to see in your proposal and attachments
- Tips for communicating with funders during the grant process
- Additional resources on proposal writing, including sample proposals
Following the class, Deborah Miller, Senior Advancement Officer, Baldwin-Wallace University and Julie Johnson, Director of Development and Marketing, Malachi House, will lead a discussion on the pros and cons of hiring consultants for proposal writing and other nonprofit work. Learn tips for choosing consultants and the best ways to have an effective and rewarding relationship.
About the presenters:
Julie Johnson has worked in the non-profit sector for the past fifteen years, and currently serves as the Director of Development and Marketing at Malachi House. Prior to Julie’s career as a development professional, she served as a police officer, a program director, and as the executive director for two small non-profit organizations in the Greater Cleveland area. In addition to her experience writing proposals at the private and family foundation, corporate, local and federal government levels, Julie has worked with consultants throughout her career to address a variety of non-profit focuses including funding, strategic planning, and branding.
Deborah S. Miller, CFRE, currently serves as Senior Advancement Officer for Baldwin Wallace University. From 2005-2012, she served as Director of Development for Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center where she was responsible for managing the development and marketing programs. While there, she oversaw a successful comprehensive campaign for a new building for the Center. Prior to Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center, Miller served as a Major Gifts Officer for Cleveland State University. She joined the University in 1998 as Assistant Director for the Annual Fund and also served as the Development Officer for the Fenn College of Engineering. She has been in the development field for 20 years and has experience in major & planned giving, annual giving, event planning, and board development.
