A networking and idea-sharing session for executive directors of small nonprofits.

Executive directors: what do you love about your work in leading a nonprofit, and where are your biggest struggles? Most of all, what kinds of resources or support do you need to fully thrive in your role?

Executive leadership in the nonprofit sector faces a variety of challenges. High turnover, burnout, and a sense of isolation are common issues dealt with among executives, and organizations are at risk for ongoing instability when executive directors leave for lower-pressure jobs, as well as when these leaders don’t receive the full professional or social support they need. Meanwhile, the sector becomes stronger when executive directors receive the right professional and social support.

In an informal, peer learning format, leaders of small nonprofit organizations are invited to gather, connect with peers, and share ideas, strategies, and struggles related to their experience running an organization. This session is a safe space to speak honestly and candidly about what leading a small nonprofit really entails. As a group, you will be guided through questions such as these:

  • What did your journey to nonprofit leadership entail? Do you feel that there are ways in which you could have been better prepared before taking on this role?
  • What challenges, whether purely professional or otherwise, keep you awake at night?
  • What are you currently doing for professional development?
  • What do you currently do for “self-care” within your role?
  • What issues do you think you may need to learn more about? (Examples: fundraising, managing staff, board relations, etc.)

In this interactive session, leaders have an opportunity to share what’s on their minds, meet fellow executive directors who are dealing with the same issues, and explore what types of support they need to feel better equipped to tackle their roles.

Foundation Center is strategizing ways of enhancing and strengthening its long-running peer support group, the Executive Directors’ Leadership Circle, which will recruit and launch its next cohort of members in 2018. In order to serve nonprofit leaders even better, and to help leaders connect more closely with their fellow executives for mutual support, we’re looking for your ideas and input regarding what you need for better professional and personal support. This will be a safe, ED-only space, in which you can feel secure in speaking freely.

Our goal in this gathering is that you will have an opportunity to meet others in similar situations to your own, and that 2018’s Executive Directors’ Leadership Circle (for which you can expect an invitation to apply in the new year) will be well-equipped to meet your real needs.

If you are a fulltime, paid executive director of a nonprofit organization, with an annual organizational budget between $100,000 and $2 million, this convening is for you.
