Point on Prospecting (PoP) Talk: Think Global, Prospect Local: Eye on MENA (Middle East and North Africa)

Wednesday, April 05, 2017 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
In-person | New York, NY

In partnership with Foundation Center in New York, APRA of Greater New York presents the Point on Prospecting (PoP) Talks, interactive conversations that feature experts from within the nonprofit community collaborating on an array of subjects. On Wednesday April 5, 2017, we will be hosting a PoP Talk focused on sharing the tools and resources to best understand and target the philanthropic interests of major gift prospects based in the Middle East;  we want to help you think globally while prospecting locally.

The Middle East, with its quickly diversifying economy and strong cultural history of philanthropy, is one of the most promising sources of major giving in the world. As a younger, more globalized generation asserts itself philanthropically, the growing popularity of the Western approach to philanthropy, as well as the increased acceptance of charitable giving outside of traditional religious frameworks, have all contributed to the Middle East’s burgeoning philanthropic sphere.

Although this trend is a great opportunity for organizations in the U.S., a lack of transparency in the region, as well as the difficulties inherent in language barriers and establishing relationships, are ongoing challenges that this PoP Talk will address.

With nuanced understanding of the culture and region, U.S.-based philanthropic organizations are making strategic connections to reach Middle East/North African donors. We will be sharing tips and tools to help prospect researchers focusing on MENA successfully pinpoint viable donors and find pathways to fruitful philanthropic partnerships. Whether you're part of a global university, an Arab-American organization, a museum, or any other institution that may be of interest to MENA philanthropists, we hope that this discussion will prove enlightening and help lead your organization towards a useful framework on approaching the region. Items that will be discussed include the state of philanthropy in the region, general prospecting tips, and important cultural and linguistic matters to take into account.
