Nonprofits and Taxes: Are You Off The Hook?

Despite their tax exempt status, many nonprofit and religious organizations actually have many potential tax obligations to be aware of. For example, while these organizations are exempt from federal and state income tax, no blanket exemption for sales and use taxes exist. Which types of sales are nonprofits exempt from? Which types of organizations are required to obtain a Sellers Permit? Which types of organizations qualify for California’s Welfare Exemption? This presentation will cover many of the frequently-asked BOE compliance questions for nonprofit and exempt organizations.
About the Presenter:
Kathryn Asprey is the Senior Tax Policy Advisor for Board Member Ma.
Kathryn started her career with the Board of Equalization in 2002 as a Business Taxes Representative in the Oakland District Office. In 2005, she became a Business Taxes Compliance Specialist. In 2008, she spent a year working as a Tax Associate at KPMG, LLP in the Sales and Local Tax Department, after which time she returned to the BOE's Oakland District. Throughout her career at the BOE, she has also served as Technical Advisor to the Oakland District Principal Compliance Supervisor and District Administrator, helping to identify opportunities and implement strategies to improve the District's audit and compliance programs. Additionally, she has served as a subject matter expert at BOE outreach events and was a BOE recruiter. Kathryn graduated with honors from Humboldt State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
