Meet the Author: Ten Nonprofit Funding Models

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
In-person | San Francisco, CA

Identify and develop a funding model to achieve your nonprofit's programmatic goals.

Nonprofit funding strategy and financial sustainability are central to creating a vibrant and effective sector. Yet our understanding about these issues remains far less sophisticated than our understanding of programs. Conventional wisdom, such as “diversification is good,” substitutes for thoughtful planning. Building upon years of primary research and consulting experience with dozens of nonprofit clients, Bridgespan has developed an approach for how an organization can identify and develop a funding model that will allow it to achieve its programmatic aspirations. This session will provide practical guidance on the steps required and review the types of decisions and tradeoffs that nonprofit leaders need to make along the way.

Presenter: Peter Kim is a manager in Bridgespan's New York office. Since joining the firm in 2007, Peter has worked with leading nonprofit organizations and philanthropic funders spanning the education, youth development, environment, and community development sectors. Peter has advised clients on a wide range of issues including growth planning, funding strategies, organizational effectiveness, and program alignment.

Peter particularly has been active in the firm's research on issues related to nonprofit finance and capital. He is the co-author of "Ten Nonprofit Funding Models" (Stanford Social Innovation Review, 2009), which was recognized as the publication's most widely read article of the year. He is also the co-author of “Finding Your Funding Model” (Stanford Social Innovation Review, 2011) and the companion how-to guide, “Finding Your Funding Model: A Practical Approach to Nonprofit Sustainability” ( Peter has also spoken on these topics at numerous conferences.
