This session will discuss the basic provisions of the new DC Nonprofit Code, which goes into effect on January 1, 2012, and how it will impact how your nonprofit governs itself. Learn about the new rules regarding membership organizations, the fiduciary duties of officers and directors, board committees and registered agents.

Presenter: Regina Hopkins

Regina Hopkins is the Project Director of the Community Economic Development Project of the DC Bar Pro Bono Program. The CED Project‘s mission is to assist non-profit organizations in obtaining pro bono legal counsel. To date it has matched over 165 non-profit organizations with pro bono counsel for on-going legal representation. Prior to joining the DC Bar Pro Bono Program, Regina served as Vice President and General Counsel of Habitat for Humanity International from 1993 to 2005 and as staff attorney from 1990 to 1993. Regina has extensive experience in non-profit governance and the laws relating to tax-exempt organizations. Before serving with Habitat for Humanity, Regina worked as a tax attorney in New York City for almost ten years with the law firms of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan and LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae. Regina was graduated form Carnegie-Mellon University in 1977 and Boston College Law School in 1980. She is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia, New York, and Georgia.
