Where can I find information on planned giving?

The Association of Fundraising Professionals defines planned giving in the following way: a systematic effort to identify and cultivate a person for the purpose of generating a major gift that is structured and that integrates sound personal, financial, and estate-planning concepts with the prospect's plans for lifetime or testamentary giving. A planned gift has tax implications and is often transmitted through a legal instrument, such as a will or a trust.

According to the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers' More Giving Together, a giving circle "is formed when individuals come together and pool their dollars, decide together where to give the money (and other resources such as volunteer time), and learn together about their community and philanthropy."

How much do Americans give to charity?

Charitable giving statistics have been published annually since 1955 in Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy, researched and written by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University and published by the Giving Institute and Giving USA Foundation. Total charitable contributions by individuals, corporations, and foundations was an estimated $390.05 billion in 2016, up 2.7 percent 0ver 2015, according to Giving USA 2017.

How can I get funding for my personal project?

Personal or independent projects -- for example, traveling overseas for a mission, attending summer camp, raising money for a specific person in need -- typically are not eligible to receive foundation grants. However, if your project is artistic or research-related, or its primary purpose is to serve a larger audience and improve the community, you could consider fiscal sponsorship as a means to qualify for foundation grants.
